Truk Lagoon Dive Trip
Wreck diver's ultimate destination.
This magnificent diving site is the wreck diver's ultimate destination, suitable for both novice and experienced divers. The calm, clear, sheltered lagoon is one of the largest in the world and is relatively free of currents, providing safe, easy diving conditions.
Some have described this lagoon as Japan's equivalent of the Americans' Pearl Harbour, in that it was their respective nation's largest forward naval base.
In 1944, its capacity as a naval base was destroyed through naval air attack. Forewarned by intelligence a week before the US raid, the Japanese had withdrawn their larger warships to Palau. On February 17 1944, the Americans launch an early morning attack against Truk Lagoon. Operation Hailstone lasted for three days, as American carrier-based planes sank twelve smaller Japanese warships and thirty-two merchant ships while destroying 275 aircraft. The consequences of the attack made it the biggest ship graveyard in the world.
It is relatively easy to dive as the surrounding reef protects the lagoon from strong currents. Some wrecks lie in deeper waters making this lagoon a perfect playground for technical divers. There are two options Truk Lagoon Diving Packages which is either land-based or via a liveaboard diving vessel. The area can be dived on a year-round basis but the best conditions are from December to April. Water temperature is typically warm with a range of 28-29°C.
Truk lagoon is wreck divers heaven and on all keen divers bucket lists.
