Here at Abyss Scuba Diving, we are passionate about the environment and our oceans. We believe it’s every diver’s job to inspire and educate people about the importance of protecting and preserving our beautiful marine environment.

As a PADI Divemaster and an Abyss Eco-Warrior, you will get the tools and experience to make a difference and help preserve our oceans for generations to come!

During your Divemaster Internship with Eco-Warrior program, you will work closely with different organisations within the Environmental and Scientific industries as well as organise and run your own environmental programs. Not only will you end the program as a PADI Divemaster, you will also achieve the PADI Master Scuba Diver rating (with certifications that will compliment your environmentally focused diving and resume) as well as the Nationally Recognised AHCLPW305A: Perform diving for scientific purposes and gain invaluable experience in the ocean conservation sector and do your part for our environment!

As an Abyss Eco Warrior graduate you will earn the following certifications:

• PADI Divemaster (Project Aware certification card)
• First Aid at Work
• Perform diving for scientific purposes (AHCLPW305A)
• PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy
• PADI Enriched Air
• PADI Project Aware Specialist
• PADI Fish ID Specialist
• PADI Dive Against Debris
• PADI Master Scuba Diver (Project Aware certification card)

Not only will you earn a wide range of certifications which build your experience and employability, but you will also work with a range of groups to coordinate and facilitate existing scientific and environmental programs. Some of these programs include:

Crayweed Project (Run by a Marine Science team at UNSW)

The aim of OPERATION CRAYWEED is to bring crayweed back to reefs where it once flourished and to re-establish this essential habitat and food source for Sydney’s coastal marine biodiversity. We are working with the UNSW team to reintroduce Crayweed into a number of local sites.

Weedy Seadragon Survey
Working with local research and citizen science organisations, Abyss runs survey Weedy Seadragon Survey dives at local sites, primarily in Botany Bay collecting data on our native Weedy Seadragons. This information is used to identify individual dragons (if you can find a new one you can name it!) and get a clearer picture of their habits, distribution and behaviour.

Project AWARE: Dive Against Debris
Project AWARE’s flagship citizen-science program, Dive Against Debris, empowers scuba divers to remove marine debris from the ocean and report data on the types, quantities and locations of materials collected. During your Eco-Warrior program, you will participate in and learn to successfully coordinate and run Dive Against Debris activities. This will allow you to continue inspiring others to take the pledge to ditch single-use plastic and remove environmentally devastating plastics and rubbish from our oceans.
